Rescue Community Updates @ 01:59 pm

love2helpothers:
Current Mood: giggly giggly

Dear friends,

Remember, for the most current updates on Rescue Community events please
check vict our website at http://www.RescueCommunity.org and click on
"calendar events" "homepage" or "Updates/Blogs."

In an effort to reach out to more marginalized people who often do not use
the internet, we will be using this email list less, and doing more
face-to-face networking, paper flyer posting, and worldwide, multicultural
outreach. We tested this method for our June 22nd meeting (which was not
announed n this email list) and discovered that we had our most racially
diverse meeting ever and also had a diversity of people from all ages,
from toddler to senior citizens! We greatly welcome people from all
backgrounds! We also have a phone list which we use to call people
worldwide to remind them of meetings. To be added to that phone list send
an email to:

Thursday, July 27th, 2006-

The Rescue Community will leave for four days
on the Caravan trip to the National Grassroots Immigrant Strategy
Conference in Washington DC. It is a well known fact that people of color
and minorities have been ruthlessly oppressed in Maine and the racism in
Maine is increasing by leaps and bounds and making international headlines
while many people in Maine ignore it.

An example of the recent increasing racism is below:

"The journalists' arrival in Maine was preceded by an inflammatory act of
malicious mischief that briefly made international headlines. On July 3,
Brent Matthews allegedly tossed a frozen pig's head inside a Lewiston
mosque where about 40 men had gathered for evening prayers. Matthews, 33,
a former Lewiston city employee, allegedly told police at the time of his
apprehension that the incident was supposed to be "a big joke."
Below is an excerpt from the full story link here:

http://www.civilrights.org/issues/hate/details.cfm?id=45018

"Brent Matthews, 33, of Lewiston, came to the police department on
Tuesday, told a detective he had thrown the head and was charged with
desecration of a church, a misdemeanor. The charge is considered a
hate-bias crime, so Matthews' case will be referred to the Attorney
General's office for further investigation, Lt. Don Mailhot said."

Matthews is currently out on Bail.

We will travel to work in solidarity with immigrants nationwide while they
stuggle through current legislation that seeks to legalize
institutionalized oppression forever. Many of you have other Summer plans
but please put them aside for four days and please join us on this
historic journey to the immigrant solidarity conference! You can make a
difference! All are welcome to join us! "The food that overflows our
market shelves and fills our tables is harvested by men, women, and
